Stay in the loop – a new accessibility service has landed at YWG

Earlier this year, we chatted with Julie Chapko, our Accessibility and Operations Support Specialist, to learn how YWG is removing barriers and working to make the terminal an inclusive place for all. Chapko and the accessibility team identified a gap for passengers who are hard of hearing and set a goal to install hearing loops at the airport, an assistive technology that’s popular in public spaces around Europe and is now making its way to North America.

"We’re so excited to launch hearing loops at YWG to create a more inclusive and accessible travel experience for passengers with hearing loss," says Chapko. "This service reflects our commitment to creating a barrier free environment where everyone can communicate and travel with ease.

Hearing loops are designed to improve communication access to individuals with hearing loss by transmitting sound through a magnetic field to telecoil-enabled hearing aids or cochlear implants. This reduces unwanted background noise in bustling public areas, which improves clarity and understanding as you navigate the airport. Hearing loops are the internationally accepted standard for providing hearing accommodation in public spaces. Once installed, loops are always active, making them easy and inconspicuous to use.

At YWG, hearing loop systems are marked with the universal hearing loop sign and are found at all check-in counters, the information booth on the first floor, and valet desks.

For those who don’t use hearing aids or cochlear implants, compatible headsets are available at the Information Booth on the first floor. Ask a staff member, and they’ll be happy to assist.

We want you to feel connected and confident as you travel through YWG—no matter your journey. To learn more about all the support services available, visit our Accessibility page.
