Travel tips for navigating the holiday season

It's the most beautiful time of the year. Lights fill the terminal, spreading so much cheer. But, to avoid feeling grinchy while traveling for the holidays, you better make a list and check it twice to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Here are some tried and true tips to keep in mind as you jingle all the way through Winnipeg Richardson International Airport to connect with loved ones this season.

Give yourself time
Unpredictable winter weather can lead to flight delays or cancellations. Plan for potential disruptions by giving yourself ample time to get where you’re going. Consider choosing connecting flights with generous layover times to accommodate delays or booking departure flights a few days ahead of your gatherings. It’s also a good idea to pack essential items such as medications, important documents and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag, just in case.

Know before you go
Be sure to check the travel requirements for all the countries on your itinerary, including those you’re transiting through, in advance of your trip. You can confirm all the details by contacting your airline. It’s also good to double-check the status of your flight before leaving home.

Pack smart
Learn what you can and can’t put in your luggage by visiting CATSA's website. Holiday gifts may need to be opened and inspected by screening officers, so wait until you clear security to wrap them at our free gift-wrapping station, located after the security checkpoint for domestic and international flights. Also, don’t forget that liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on need to be in containers of 100 ml or less and fit in a clear, resealable one-litre bag.

Plan your parking
Save time and money by pre-booking your airport parking online. Alternatively, Winnipeg Transit, taxi companies, and ridesharing services can deliver you to the terminal’s front door.

Go Digital
Skip the line at the airline counters by checking in for your flight online at home and saving your boarding pass to your phone. If you’re travelling internationally, you can submit your customs and immigration declarations up to 72 hours before returning home by using the Advance Declaration feature in the CBSA’s ArriveCAN app.

Arrive Early
The holidays are a busy time at YWG, so you’ll likely encounter higher passenger volumes at peak times. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your boarding gate by arriving at the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before taking off to a U.S. or international destination.

Last minute shopping
Forgot someone on your holiday shopping list or need a last-minute host gift? From hand-crafted candles and locally roasted coffee at our holiday market to jewelry, fashion-forward handbags and everything in between, YWG has you covered for holiday giving.

Have questions?
If you need help or directions at the airport, look for one of our friendly Goldwing Ambassadors in their easy-to-spot gold blazers. The team at our Information Booth, located in the Arrivals Hall near Door 2, is also ready to answer any questions you may have.
